The Languedoc runs from Nîmes to the Spanish border, between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Cévennes and Montagne Noire. Its main grapes are Carignan, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. Terrasses du Larzac, below the Larzac plateau, makes only red wine; Saint-Chinian has limestone soils in the southeast and schist in the northwest. The IGP Pays d'Oc covers varietal wines from 58 grapes, led by Merlot and Chardonnay.
