Douro
Portugal
The Douro lies in northeastern Portugal, sheltered from humid westerly winds by the Marão and Montemuro mountains. Winters are very cold and summers hot and dry, with schist soils and terraced vineyards. It is best known for Port, made by adding grape spirit to halt fermentation. Ruby keeps the colour and fruit of a young wine; Tawny matures in casks or vats, including the 10- and 20-year-old categories.
