Bordeaux
France
Bordeaux lies around the Gironde estuary, formed where the Garonne and Dordogne meet, and its mild climate is tempered by the estuary and the Atlantic. On the gravel soils of the Left Bank (Médoc, Haut-Médoc, Margaux, Pauillac, Pessac-Léognan), Cabernet Sauvignon leads; in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, along the Dordogne, Merlot does. In Sauternes, morning mists from the Ciron river encourage the noble rot behind its sweet, Sémillon-based wines.
