Alsace
France
Alsace lies in northeastern France, in the Rhine Valley facing Germany, at the foot of the Vosges. The mountains shelter it from oceanic influences, giving a sunny, dry, semi-continental climate: Colmar receives about 595 mm of rain a year. Wines labelled with a grape name, such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer or Sylvaner, are 100% that variety. There are 51 Grands Crus, plus sweet late-harvest and Sélection de Grains Nobles wines.
