Burgenland
Jois · Austria
Burgenland, in eastern Austria, shares Lake Neusiedl with Hungary. Its Pannonian, mildly continental climate is dry, with about 600 mm of rain a year, and the lake moderates the nights. It has more red-grape vineyard than any other Austrian region, chiefly Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. Neusiedlersee DAC covers Zweigelt and botrytised sweet wines; Leithaberg DAC covers Blaufränkisch and whites grown on limestone and schist.
